We believe complex infrastructure demands clarity, not noise.

SmedTech exists to help clients navigate complexity across the full lifecycle of major infrastructure investments —from early development and procurement through to delivery and operations. At every stage, we provide specialist advice tailored to the task at hand, while always looking ahead to ensure today’s decisions create value and reduce risk tomorrow.

We are grounded in technical excellence, but our role goes beyond technical advice alone. Our clients value that we act as integrators and client advocates—bringing together technical, commercial, and legal perspectives to support confident, well-informed decision-making when it matters most.

We believe independence matters. Our advice is frank, objective, and evidence-based—shaped by technical rigour and commercial reality, not constrained by narrow thinking, internal bias, or institutional interests. We say what needs to be said, clearly and constructively, in service of the best outcome for our clients.

We are deliberately small, focused, and nimble. We are not a large design house, and we do not solve problems by deploying large volumes of resources. Instead, we apply precision and expertise—using high-performing small teams to address the right problems, at the right time, with intent and accountability.

We value quality over scale, insight over output, and outcomes over activity.

We are SmedTech.

Independent. Precise. Trusted advisors across the infrastructure industry.
Who is SmedTech?

"Many firms know engineering.
Many know procurement.
Very few genuinely understand both.
SmedTech does."

Our Values
Independent advice. No conflicts. No compromise.
SmedTech operates as an independent advisory firm. We have no commercial interests in project outcomes, no affiliated construction or delivery partners, and no incentive other than delivering the right advice for our clients. That independence is foundational to the trust our clients place in us — and it shapes every recommendation we make.
Real experience. Not just theoretical knowledge.
Every member of the SmedTech team has been in the field — on major projects, in government, and at the table where decisions are made. We don't advise from a distance. We bring direct, hands-on expertise in the planning, design, procurement, and delivery of transport infrastructure, and we apply that knowledge practically on every project we take on.
Complex problems. Clear advice.
Transport infrastructure projects are inherently complex — multi-stakeholder, multi-billion-dollar, and high-stakes. Our job is to cut through that complexity and give our clients clarity. Clear recommendations, clearly communicated, with a clear understanding of the implications. We don't overcomplicate. We illuminate.
Better outcomes come from working together.
SmedTech has a strong track record of working alongside major consulting partners, government departments, and delivery consortia to achieve shared project goals. We don't compete with our partners — we complement them. Our best work is done in collaboration, and we bring the kind of team culture that makes complex, multi-party projects run better.

Where We Came From
Smedley Technical & Strategic, now widely known as SmedTech, started in 2015 as a one-person operation with a simple ambition: to provide experienced, independent advice to clients delivering complex infrastructure.
It didn't stay a one person for long.

We soon found ourselves being called upon by leading government and private sector clients to advise on — and help lead — some of Australia's largest and most complex infrastructure projects. What started in transport has steadily grown into a broader infrastructure advisory business, built through the strength of our people, our relationships and the work we've delivered.

Along the way, we have developed a particular depth of expertise in toll roads, and today SmedTech is recognised as one of Australia's leading advisors in the sector. Our unparalleled experience gives our clients access to a depth of knowledge developed across the majority of Australia's major toll road networks and projects.

Today, SmedTech works with clients across Australia's eastern seaboard, South Australia and Tasmania, as well as New Zealand. Our foundations remain firmly in transport, but our expertise has expanded into the water and energy sectors, where we are bringing the same strategic, technical and commercial thinking to a new generation of infrastructure challenges.

Over the past decade, we've advised on more than $115 billion of infrastructure projects — from major roads, motorways and tunnels to some of Australia's most significant water and energy investments.

We've grown considerably since 2015, but the philosophy behind SmedTech hasn't changed: experienced people, small high-performing teams, independent thinking and a relentless focus on getting the best outcome for our clients.
Where do we operate
Founded in Melbourne, SmedTech has grown to support clients across Australia and New Zealand. We have advised on more than 85 infrastructure investments or strategic outcomes across Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, Tasmania, South Australia, and New Zealand, as well as at the Australian Federal Government level, bringing our expertise to clients across jurisdictions, sectors and delivery environments. Our people are based across Australia—from capital cities to regional locations—giving us the flexibility to bring the right expertise to our clients, wherever their projects take us.
